Aedes has burst onto the scene from Finland with their debut EP, “Odious Imprecation,” and it already feels like they’re brimming with confidence for a band that’s just starting out.
This four-track release packs a punch way heavier than you'd expect from something so short.
The Finnish underground is known for delivering solid music, and Aedes fits right in with that vibe of cold, atmospheric brutality without copying anyone outright.
There’s a clear focus here — almost like they're making a statement that they’re gearing up for something much bigger.

The first two tracks, “Heretical Rebirth” and “Portraits of Hell,” kick off with crazy speed and that unmistakable Finnish sound that feels like a mix of Corpsessed, Krypts, and the early days of Desolate Shrine. You can definitely catch hints of classic Finnish heaviness, but they also throw in some cosmic dissonance — almost like they’ve soaked up vibes from Dead Congregation, StarGazer, and early Morbid Angel, but twisted it through their own icy atmosphere.
If you're curious about what influences are driving Aedes, it’s pretty straightforward: they’re pulling from both the Finnish death/doom scene and some of the more otherworldly cosmic death metal styles without falling into the usual cavern-death trap.
It’s aggressive, sure, but there’s thought behind it — this isn’t just noise.

Things get even more interesting with the last two tracks. “Merging Into Madness” starts off with some eerie, almost clean notes before morphing into a heavy mid-tempo beast.
This is where Aedes shows they have bigger dreams.
The balance of dread, atmosphere, and that slow-burning tension indicates they're not just about straightforward death metal. “Cosmic Void Decay” takes it up a notch — it's slower, heavier, and way more intense, but also deeper and more thought-out.
These tracks make it clear that Aedes is already thinking about their future sound.
If you’re wondering how they might evolve next, it’s pretty obvious: they’ll lean even more into those atmospheric, cosmic, doom-influenced themes. Sure, they’ll keep the faster stuff, but it’s the heavy, suffocating vibes that truly highlight their character.

When it comes to production, the EP nails that perfect balance. It’s gritty but not messy, clear but not overly polished. The guitars have that classic Finnish chill to them, the drums hit hard without being too perfect, and the vocals sit right in the mix, holding everything together.
For a debut EP, it sounds surprisingly mature — like they already know where they want to go next.
If you’re considering potential future themes, the cosmic perspective certainly appears to be a rational direction. They’re already hinting at it. Plus, there’s a strong sense of psychological decay and existential dread that could easily become a bigger theme down the line. We might see even more cosmic death, mental breakdowns, and some doom-death mashups. Their next project could really go bigger, darker, and more atmospheric without losing any power.

In the end, “Odious Imprecation” is a killer first outing from a band that looks ready to grow quickly. It’s short, intense, atmospheric, and full of potential.
They could’ve easily added a couple more tracks and passed it off as a compact full-length, but honestly, the EP format works well — it feels like a shot across the bow.
If they continue to build on those atmospheric and cosmic elements while sharpening the riffs and expanding their song structures, the next EP or album could truly be something massive.
Finland has birthed another gem.
