Saxon - Nigel Glockler Reveals Groove-Oriented New Album Details
In a new conversation with Rock Daydream Nation, Saxon drummer Nigel Glockler offered the first major insight into the band’s upcoming studio album — the follow-up to 2024’s “Hell, Fire And Damnation”. According to Nigel, the new material moves away from the hyper-fast thrash tendencies heard on the last record and instead leans heavily into groove. “There’s not quite so many thrash-type feels on it,” he explained. “It’s a lot more groove orientated, but it’s very heavy. For me, that’s the most important thing — it’s got to groove, whether it’s 500 miles an hour or 20.”
Nigel also discussed the meticulous approach he takes when tracking drums for Saxon albums, revealing that he always records to a click track. The band spends significant time fine-tuning tempos during the demo phase to ensure every track sits “perfectly within a groove.” Once satisfied with the structure, Nigel prefers recording his parts alone, guided by the demo guitars and click foundation to maintain precision throughout the song.
Saxon frontman Biff Byford also recently confirmed that he has begun working on lyrics for the upcoming record, drawing from ideas contributed by Doug Scarratt, Nigel Glockler, and bassist Tim “Nibbs” Carter. While still in progress, the band expects the new album to be released in autumn 2025, with recording sessions scheduled to begin in November following the end of their touring commitments.
Biff has overcome a series of serious health challenges in recent years, including bowel cancer treatment, heart surgery, and a procedure for atrial flutter in 2024. Despite these obstacles, he remains fully engaged in the creative process and continues to lead Saxon forward with strength and determination. The new album will be the band’s first since guitarist Paul Quinn stepped back from touring, with Brian Tatler (Diamond Head) filling his role on the road.
Originating in South Yorkshire, Saxon have sold more than 23 million albums and helped define the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. With classics like “Wheels Of Steel”, “Denim And Leather”, and “Princess Of The Night”, the band’s legacy stands strong — and the new material promises to deliver another powerful chapter in their long-running history.
No tour dates for the new album cycle have yet been announced.
