Obliveon - Steve DiGiorgio Joins Long-Awaited New Album
Canadian progressive metal innovators Obliveon have announced that they have officially parted ways with bassist Antoine Baril. Taking over bass duties for the band’s long-awaited new album is none other than Steve DiGiorgio — the legendary fretless bassist known worldwide for his work with Testament, Death, Sadus, and dozens of other influential metal projects.
The band shared the update on December 13, explaining that while their time with Antoine included great experiences and memorable live performances throughout the summer, their creative paths naturally diverged due to increasingly demanding schedules. They expressed deep gratitude for his musicianship and friendship, wishing him well in future endeavors.
Looking ahead, Obliveon confirmed that the bass sessions planned for December will move forward as intended, now with Steve DiGiorgio in the studio. The band highlighted their long relationship with DiGiorgio, dating back to the late 1980s during his early years with Sadus. This longstanding bond makes the collaboration feel like a natural evolution rather than a surprising shift.
With more than 40 studio albums and over 30 years of global touring experience, DiGiorgio brings unmatched technical precision and creativity to the recording sessions. His contributions are expected to add significant depth to what is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated metal releases of 2026.
Obliveon’s legacy runs deep across the progressive and cybermetal worlds. Since forming in Montreal in 1987, the band has built a cult following through ambitious songwriting, complex guitar architecture, and a unique fusion of death metal aggression with futuristic atmospheres. Their classic albums — “From This Day Forward,” “Nemesis,” “Cybervoid,” and “Carnivore Mothermouth” — remain highly regarded pillars of the genre.
After disbanding in 2002, Obliveon reunited periodically before officially coming back together in 2021 with renewed energy and a mission to create new music. Their upcoming album, set for release in 2026, marks their first full-length studio effort in over two decades and stands as a return many fans thought they would never see.
Obliveon Lineup:
Martin Gagné – Guitar (since 1987)
Alain Demers – Drums (since 1989)
Pierre Rémillard – Guitar (since 1989)
Bruno Bernier – Vocals (since 1994)
Former bassist Antoine Baril, known for his work with Augury and From Dying Suns — as well as collaborations with Contemplator and Deviant Process — remains an important chapter in Obliveon’s history, even as the band moves boldly into a new era.
No tour dates have been announced regarding the new album cycle yet, but with recording underway, more updates are expected soon.
